As a native to Northern Colorado, Stephen Shachtman has a wide vocabulary of artistic tendency. After earning his MFA in jewelry design/metalsmithing from Rochester Institute of Technology, Stephen chose Denver to pursue his personal endeavors in utilitarian creations in jewelry, furniture, lighting design, as well as abstract sculpture and public art. Stephen specializes in; corten steel, copper, stone, glass sculptures and fabrication. In 2013, Stephen’s sculpture “Bridge” was voted Denver’s best new public art project. As of recent Stephen had been teaching Jewelry Design/ metalsmithing at Metro State University in Denver before focusing exclusively on studio work, public art projects, and architectural designs.
His current sculptures are created in a constructivist nature; focus on spatial balance between dimensional space within the sculptural form and that in which the sculpture physically occupies. This focus on dimensional balance and the play of positive and negative space, from both circular and rectangular windows, allows the piece to respond to its natural surroundings framing unexpected views. With illumination altering shadow and perspective to enhance the viewers’ interaction and this fourth dimension which lighting creates.
